Is it time for you to move to a new neighborhood?

So you’ve been living in the same apartment for years. You know your neighbors and they know you. You’ve worked at every decent job you could find that is not too far away from your location. So you must be thinking is it time for you to move?
Reasons to move to a new neighborhood can include:

  • Lower rent
  • Better job opportunities
  • Starting fresh

Changing neighborhoods is not as drastic as changing cities, but it still has its pros and cons. If you are moving only to save money on rent you need to first take a look at some other details that might cost you in the long run. If you have decided what neighborhood you are targeting with your search, go and visit it first. Walk into some shops. See what the prices are like. Talk to people a little bit and ask them about their experience with the neighborhood. If you are moving to save money you don’t want to end up paying double for the dry cleaning and transportation than you did in your old neighborhood.

Explore the neighborhood.

On the plus side, the new neighborhood means the whole new part of the city to explore. You will certainly enjoy finding out about unique things that it has to offer. That small coffee shop around the corner that makes the best coffee. Or that bakery that makes just the best pie in town! And a new neighborhood offers new connections. You will meet new people, find new jobs and open yourself to new experiences.

Is changing cities the best option?

Maybe you are just tired of the city altogether. Changing cities can be really scary but really exciting. Especially if you are moving from coast to coast.  You will have the opportunity to really start fresh. Engage yourself in a whole different culture that can inspire you and motivate you to achieve your potential. A great thing about moving to a different city is that you can reinvent yourself. Be whomever you wanted to be.
The bad side about changing cities is that it can be really scary. You will be leaving your friends and family. You will be starting all over again. Nostalgia can be a tricky thing and not everyone is good at dealing with it.
But if you are the kind of person that likes changes. The kind of person that likes meeting new people and experiencing new cultures then you have the answer to the question: Is it time for you to move?

Think about whether moving for a job is a good reason.

Pros of moving for a job

On one hand, there is your career. You have invested so much in yourself and you really want to see it pay off. You don’t want to get stuck at your job and not advance. If you are moving to a bigger city it opens up a whole new world of opportunities for you. Not only at your new job, but in all the others that will come after it.

Cons of moving for a job

On the other hand, you need to take into account what you will be leaving. You don’t want to end up in a position where you regret your decision later on. Leaving your friends and family can be emotionally hard. Make sure you are willing to make that sacrifice.
And moving to a new city for a job might not necessarily advance your career as much as you want it to. Alongside your friends and family, you will also be leaving all your contacts behind.

Can you afford to move?

Before you get to actually moving you need think about finances. Can you afford to move? Moving costs money. You will have to get a new apartment, pay the moving company and start fresh somewhere. It’s really important to calculate your finances before you move so you can have a good idea on how much the move might cost you. Moving companies can give you a good estimate of how much it would cost to move. And they can also be a great source of information about everything you want to know about your new location.

Setting the budget
It is important to calculate all the costs in order to see whether your budget can support the move.

Have in mind that different neighborhoods, let alone different cities, have different prices.  Take into account that the first few months might be really hard on your budget. Especially if you don’t have a job waiting for you in the new city.
